Emergency Response—Why access to portable toilets & showers is important during a disaster

laundry-trailers-266When a natural disaster strikes, one of the often looked-over aspects of the disaster is the loss of running water, sanitation, and clean living conditions for those affected. In the wake of these tragedies, access to portable toilets and showers is an important part of aid and relief efforts.

The last thing people need to worry about when recovering from a natural disaster is sanitation and access to clean, hot water, and these are often the most sought-after resources. Many structures that would normally provide these services (YMCAs, shelters, etc.) are likely to have been affected by disaster, leaving local communities with little ability to meet those needs.

At Edmunds, we offer a variety of portable toilet, shower, sanitation, and laundry facilities aimed at providing disaster relief. Our commercial restroom trailers offer 5 toilet stalls in the women’s side and 2 stalls, 2 urinals in the men’s. Some of our restroom trailers have built-in sinks, but we also offer stand-alone hand washing units. Shower trailers feature multiple private shower stalls with sinks, access to hot and cold water, as well as foldout steps and handrails for ease of access.

Access to clean clothes in another commonly looked over, but difficult, challenge in the wake of disasters. In order to combat this aspect of rebuilding, we offer mobile laundry trailers with stacked washers and dryers, folding countertops, and utility sinks for soaking and hand-washing.

Nothing feels as good as a hot shower or a clean change of clothes when normal outlets for meeting those needs are no longer available to you. The clean-up process after a natural disaster may take some time, but ensuring that those affected have access to ways to meet their basic needs can go a long way while the rebuilding process continues.

Reliable Emergency Assistance from Edmunds Waste Removal

When their water main burst in April 2014, Edmunds provided restroom trailers and an 8-stall shower trailer for the residents of Poplar Springs in the City of Petersburg.

On April 7, nearly 4,500 businesses and residents of eastern Petersburg, VA were affected when a water line rupture happened close to the intersection of S. Crater Road and Morton Avenue. Many residents had little to no water flow and/or some water discoloration and odor following the rupture.

While the city worked to repair the damage, Edmunds stepped in to provide some short-term crisis aid, delivering restroom trailers and a shower trailer so that those affected by the water main burst were able to take care of some necessities.

In the event of these kinds of emergencies, portable restroom and shower solutions can be a helpful factor not only in clean-up efforts, but in allowing communities to return to normal as quickly as possible.

For over 20 years, Edmunds Waste Removal has been serving and working in Central and Southside Virginia. We take pride in providing exceptional customer service in situations that range from celebration to crisis aid.
